Credit (or the ability to borrow money) can be a powerful tool in reaching you financial goals. Or, it can be a hidden enemy for those who do not have a spending plan or do not develop and maintain responsible credit management and behavior skills.
Understanding what your credit history is – what’s in it, what’s not in it and how you can improve your credit profile, and how it can help you reach your financial goals. Even if you’ve never had a credit problem, the more you know about what your credit report it, how your credit score is calculated, and who uses your credit report and score, can only help you make more informed financial decisions.
Renting vs. Buying. Which one’s right for you? We’ll help you decide and navigate the home buying process.
Owning a home – whether it’s a house or a condo – can also be a smart move financially, since you’re buying a valuable asset with the money you spend for shelter. Eligible Applicants: This program is not income based.
Responsible SC homeowners who are facing the possibility of foreclosure due to a financial hardship beyond their control are encouraged to apply for mortgage assistance through one of our foreclosure prevention programs.
One of the programs that we use to provide mortgage assistance is SC HELP. Unemployment, underemployment, reduction of income for self-employed, death of a spouse, catastrophic medical expenses and/or divorce may be qualifying circumstances to receive assistance. SC HELP provides grants — not loans — so funds do not necessarily have to be repaid.
Eligible program participants can receive up to $36,000 or 24 months assistance. Visit www.schelp.gov and choose Charleston County Human Services Commission/Palmetto CAP to apply or call (843) 720-3718.
***NOTE: The SC HELP program officially ended on November 30, 2017. Individuals who are on file in the system as having started an application prior to that date can still receive assistance if they submit all required documents before the program ends on February 1, 2018.***
Learn how to become a savvy shopper and slash your grocery bills! Take-home materials are provided. Register online with grocery stores, product manufacturers, service providers and coupon websites. Check the event calendar to learn about Palmetto CAP’s grocery store tours with WellCare and you may be able to receive a $10 gift card to help put what you’ve learned into action!
